Perennial herbs or subshrubs with alternate, palmati- or pinnatisect, lobed, serrate or rarely entire leaves. Capitula small, numerous, disciform, in corymbs or rarely solitary. Involucre vase-shaped, phyllaries irregularly 3-4-seriate, imbricate, membranous margined. Receptacle convex to obtusely conical, bald. Marginal female florets uniseriate, with ± dorsally compressed, stiffly 2-4-toothed corolla tube. Disc-florets with sessile glanded, 5-lobed, abruptly broadened in upper half, glabrous corolla tube. Anthers with ± triangular terminal appendage. Style branches linear, truncate. Cypselas obovoid, inconspicuously 5-6-ribbed, thin-walled, generally with myxogenic cells in rows. Pappus absent.
A small genus comprising 34 spceies, mainly segregated from Artemisia, and distributed in China, Central Asia, Japan, Afghanistan, Pakistan. Represented in our area by rwo species.
