Woody lianes or perennial herbs. Leaf pinnately trifoliolate, stipulate, stipels small, deciduous. Inflorescence axillary racemose or flowers in groups along the rachis. Bract and bracteoles small. Calyx 2-lipped, upper lip larger, truncate or 2 lobed, lower entire or trifid. Vexillum rounded, reflexed. Keel incurved, obtuse or beaked, often twisted. Stamens generally monadelphous, the vexillary stamen free at the base, rarely quite free, anthers uniform. Ovary multiovulate, style incurved, stigma terminal. Fruit linear or oblong, with a wing or rib near the upper suture, sometimes thinly filled within between the seeds.

A genus with 51 species, throughout the tropics and subtropics, mainly :American in distribution; locally represented by 1 species only.
