Perennial herbs with short rhizomes. Roots fleshy or elongated with swollen parts. Leaves basal, distichous, sessile, linear. Inflorescence a cymose panicle, 1-6(-10)-flowered, scape up to 1.5 m tall. Flowers slightly zygomorphic, hypogynous. Tepals 6, petaloid, funnel shaped, basally connate into a tube. Stamens 6, epiphyllous at the tip of the tube, anthers dorsifixed. Ovary trilocular, style erect, stigma capitate. Fruit a capsule (rarely formed).

A genus with c. 15 species; distributed in Japan, China to Central Europe; represented in Pakistan by only one species which is cultivated and grows wild in some areas.
