Unarmed herbs or shrubs with simple and usually entire leaves. Flowers small, in axillary fascicles, pedicellate. Calyx truncate, often with basal swellings that alternate with the calyx lobes. Stamens 5, attached at the base of corolla. Anthers longer than filaments; dehiscence porose. Berry subglobose.

A genus of 200 species, distributed mainly in tropical America, E. Asia. Represented in Pakistan by 1 cultivated species.
