I.C. Hedge

  • Dysophylla auct.; Benth.
  • Eusteralis Rafinesque

Annual or perennial herbs, aromatic or not, with an indumentum (in ours) of simple eglandular hairs, or almost glabrous. Leaves in opposite pairs or whorls of 3 or more, linear to ovate, subentire to serrate, petiolate to sessile. Verticillasters 6-many-flowered, congested or distant, in terminal spikes or racemes. Bracts and bracteoles linear to ovate, persistent. Flowers small or very small, white to purplish. Calyx tubular campanulate to ovoid, not or scarcely bilabiate; teeth 5 subequal; tube glabrous at throat. Corolla bilabiate or scarcely so and lobes ± equal; upper lip entire. Stamens 4, subequal or anterior pair longer, straight or declinate; filaments with usually long purplish hairs at middle or near base, exserted beyond corolla lobes; thecae unilocular. Style apically deeply 2-lobed. Nutlets smooth, ovoid to oblong, not trigonous.

About 70 species mainly in SE Asia; a few in the Himalayas and southern tropical Africa. Pogostemon and "Dysophylla"* (Eusteralis) have usually been recognized as independent, allied genera: the former having leaves in opposite pairs and with plants usually of dry places; the latter with leaves in whorls of 3 or more and plants of wet places. The extremes are most different in facies - as, indeed, our 2 species are - but as Press (1982) has shown there are so many intermediates when a global review is undertaken that the union of the genera is a realistic treatment. Keng (1977) recognized the two taxa as sections of Pogostemon: sect. Pogostemon and sect. Eusteralis (Rafin.) Keng.
