Robust shrubs, glabrous with stiff and sharp spines. Leaves trifoliolate; petioles winged. Flowers axillary, l(-2), pentamerous, bisexual. Stamens free, Ovary and style pubescent. Fruit small, globose, pubescent. Pulp vesicles with oil cells in the midline. Seeds glabrous.
A monotypic genus, indigenous in N. China and Japan; cultivated elsewhere. It has been separated from Citrus on account of its trifoliolate leaves and free stamens.
