Perennial herbs with a long subterranean rootstock. Basal leaves arranged in a ros ette, cauline leaves very reduced and forming an involucre. All leaves deeply dissected with narrow laciniate lobes. Flowers solitary, ± campanulate. Sepals 5-7, petaloid. Stamens numerous, the outermost often developed as staminodal glands. Carpels unilocular, nut-l ike, arranged in a subglobose to ovoid head. Style much elongated after flowering, plumose.
A genus of c. 30 species distributed in temperate Eurasia, represented in Pakistan by 1 species.
