I.C. Hedge

Perennial herbs. Stems erect, simple or branched, leafy, with eglandular simple hairs. Leaves not divided, crenate or dentate, petiolate. Flowers in many-flowered, distant, verticillasters in axils of upper leaves. Bracts present. Calyx ovate-campanulate, 10-nerved, not bilabiate; teeth 5, subequal, straight, long acuminate; tube glabrous within. Corolla bilabiate, longer than calyces; upper lip hooded, vinous; lower lip 3-lobed ± as long as upper, spreading; tube short, broad, prominently annulate within. Stamens 4, didynamous, anterior pair longer; thecae bilocular, pilose or glabrous, diverging. Style with 2 short subequal subulate lobes. Nutlets smooth, trigonous, truncate.

Four species in the mountainous parts of Central Asia and adjacent areas. With more affinities to Phlomis, on account of the corolla, stamens and nutlets, than, despite its generic name, Stachys.
