    Trees. Leaves compound, pinnate; leaflets opposite, oblique. Flowers in anxillary or sub-terminal panicles. Calyx 4-6-partite. Petals 4-6, free. Sta¬mens 10; filaments united into a tube. Disc annular. Ovary ovoid, 3-5-locular; ovules many in each locule. Capsule 3-5-locular. Seeds winged.

    A genus of 7 or 8 species, mostly tropical in America and the W. Indies. Some are cultivated. Represented in W. Pakistan by 2 cultivated species.

    1 Leaflets up to 8 cm long. Fruit c. 11.5 cm long.   Swietenia mahagoni
    + Leaflets up to 14 cm long. Fruit c. 13 cm long.   Swietenia macrophylla
