Lygeum spartum Loa. ex Linn., Gen. Pl., ed 5, addend., pap. ult. post. ind. (p. “522”). 1754. Boiss., Fl. Or. 5:452. 1884; Bor, Grasses Burma Ceyl. Ind.Pak. 587. 1960; Tutin in Tutin et al., Fl. Fur. 5:255.1980.

Rhizomatous, with erect culms up to 70 cm high; rhizome and base of culm clothed with coriaceous scales. Leaf-blades up to 50 cm long and 1.5 mm wide, rigid and very tough; ligule up to 7 mm long, acute. Spathe 3-4(-9) cm long, ovate, acute or with a blade-like point. Spikelet protruding from the side of the spathe at maturity and falling entire; lemma about 2 cm long; palea 3-4 cm long; anthers about 15 mm long.

Type: Spain, Loefling (LINN).

Distribution: Kashmir,? introduced; Mediterranean region.

Lygeum is a plant of a arid places in the Mediterranean region. It is extremely unlikely that it is native in Kashmir. It is more probable, as Bor (l.c.) suggests, that it has escaped from a garden.
