Small caespitose perennial with procumbent to ascending stems. Stems 3-7 cm, slender, glabrous. Leaves 4-7 mm, linear, glabrous, apex acute, base connate, with a scarious margin. Flowers 1 (-2). Sepals 5,1. 5-2 mm, ovate-oblong, apex rounded, margin hyaline. Petals white, shorter than the sepals or absent. Stamens 5-10. Styles 5. Capsule longer than the sepals, splitting by 5 valves. Seeds less than 0.5 mm, subglobose to triangular, smooth.

Type: Described from France and Siberia, Hb. Linn. 604/6 (LINN).  
Distribution: Scandinavia, C. & .W. Asia, Siberia, W. China, N. Japan, N. America & Mexico.
