Perennial. Stems erect, weak, up to 100 cm, glabrous. striate or sparsely hairy below, scarcely branching. Leaves 25-70 x 7-32 mm, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, glabrous, apex subacute, base amplexicaule. Bracts similar to leaves but smaller. Inflorescence a lax cyme. Pedicels much longer than the calyx, slender Sepals 8-10 mm, lanceolate-elliptic, membranous, sometimes with thin hyaline margins. Petals white, 12-13 mm, bind, claw hairy. Styles 5. Capsule twice as long as the calyx, membranous, teeth 10, revolute at apex. Seeds c. 1.5 mm, tuberculate.

Distribution: N. Europe, Turkey, Iran, Caucasus, Central URSS, Siberia, Pakistan.

Usually found in subalpine meadows.
