Erect shrub, 1-2 m high, deciduous or evergreen, glabrous. Leaves 3-6 cm long, elliptic-ovate or elliptic-oblong, acute, dark green and shining above, yellowish green beneath. Panicles erect, many-flowered, rather compact, 5-10 cm long; flowers almost sessile, strongly scented. Corolla tube exceeding the calyx, usually longer than the lobes. Fruit rarely found.

Distribution: Native of Japan. Now frequently cultivated in Europe and all over the world.
Much valued for hedges, especially in temperate climates.
