Cassia sophera var. purpurea (Roxb. ex Lindl.) Baker
A small shrub, up to 1 m tall, twigs slender, purple. Leaves alternate, up to 9 cm long, paripinnate, leaflets 3-5 pairs, the upper pail is the largest, up to 3.0 cm long, elliptic, lanceolate, acute or obtuse. Flowers in axillary or terminal corymbose racemes, orange yellow in colour. Sepals 5, glabrous, oblong, obtuse. green. Petals 5 mm long, oblong, ovate, orange yellow. Stamens 10. 5 large and 5 small. Pods 5-7.5 cm long, straight, subterete.
Fl. Per.: March-April.
Distribution: According to Parker (I.e.) the native country of the taxon is unknown. Roxburgh (l.c. 1832) states that it is a native of the mountains of the Coromandel coast. Occasionally planted in Punjab.
Cultivated as a hedge plant.
