A brittle; subfleshy, prostrate, greenish herb, 30-60 cm long. Leaves ovate to elliptic-oblong, 4-7 cm long. Flowers pink, c. 1.5 cm across, almost enclosed within or protruding from the leafy, folded bracts; corolla lobes c. 8 mm long, ovate, entire, obscurely clawed and connate or cohering at base with epipetalous stamens. Ovary pubescent.
Fl. Per. Almost the year round.
Distribution: A native of C. America and southern United States, a widely cultivated ornamental in the tropics and subtropics.
