Dioecious or monoecious shrubs. Stem woody. Leaves articulated at the base, 3-11 foliolate. Stipules ochreate, sheathing, pale-brown, auricles fused at the base. Leaflets entire. Petals suborbicular. Stigma distinctly 4-lobed, style sub-basal or lateral, thickened above, clavate. Achenes completely concealed.

2 (1) All leaves 5 foliolate, stipules oblong-ovate, acuminate, leaflets not revolute, ± glabrescent to glabrous beneath, flowers large, 2.5-3.0 cm. diam, outer sepals 1.2-1.4 x 0.4-0.5 cm., longer than the inner sepals.   2 Potentilla arbuscula
+ Leaves generally 7-11 foliolate together with some 5 foliolate leaves, stipules ovate-obtuse, leaflets revolute, densely hairy beneath, flowers small, 1.4-1.7 cm. diam, outer sepals 0.3-0.5 x 0.1-0.2 cm., much shorter than the inner sepals   (3)
       
3 (2) Low growing prostrate shrubs, leaflets 0.4-0.6 x 0.2-0.3 cm., ovate-elliptic, sparsely silky-pubescent beneath, flowers mostly lateral, outer calyces sparsely sericeous.   3 Potentilla dryadanthoides
+ Tall erect shrubs, leaflets 0.6-0.8 x 0.1-0.2 cm., narrowly oblong-elliptic to linear-oblong, densely tomentose with long soft white hairs beneath, flowers mostly terminal, outer sepals densely white tomentose and with long soft white hairs.   4 Potentilla ochreata
