Annual or perennial herbs or shrubs, fetid; pubescence of simple, sometimes glandular hairs. Leaves simple, entire or sinuate-dentate, petiolate. Inflorescences solitary flowers in leaf axils or in branch forks; peduncle, bracts, and bracteoles absent; pedicel often stout. Flowers radially symmetric, large; calyx tubular, often circumscissile near the base; corolla purple or white, funnelform, the lobes sometimes cuspidate; stamens equal, inserted below the middle of the corolla tube, anthers free, basifixed, mostly elongate, dehiscing longitudinally; ovary 2 locular. Fruit a dry capsule, globose to oblong, 4-valved or irregularly dehiscent, prickly or unarmed, often subtended by persistent calyx remnants; seeds numerous, somewhat compressed laterally, often with a conspicuous caruncle; embryo curved.
A genus of about 11 species centered in Mexico. Two species in Taiwan.
