Coarse erect usually branching annual herbs. Leaves alternate, simple, often pubescent. Heads many-flowered, tubular, in terminal paniculate corymbs. Involucre cylindric, swollen at base, principal bracts in 1 series, linear, acute, with or without some outer smaller bracts. Receptacle concave, glabrous. Ray florets marginal, pistillate, fertile, in 2-several series, corolla filiform, limb 2-4-toothed. Disc florets perfect, fertile, corolla long tubular, limb 4- or 5-toothed. Anthers obtuse, entire at base. Style arms elongated, truncate or obtuse at apex. Achenes linear-oblong, angled or striate, narrowed toward apex. Pappus copious, of very fine, soft, white, hair-like bristles.

About 12 species, native of America and Australia; two species introduced and naturalized in Taiwan.
