Erect or sprawling armed shrubs, 0.5-1 m tall; stems much branched, branches pale gray, slender, thorns straight, slender, 0.5-2 cm. Leaves solitary or in clusters of 2-4, ovate, rhombic, lanceolate, or linear-lanceolate, 1.5-10 cm long, 0.5-4 cm wide; petioles to 5 mm long. Inflorescences solitary or paired flowers on long shoots or fasciculate among leaves on short shoots; pedicel 1-2 cm long. Flowers with calyx campanulate, 3-4 mm long, divided to halfway into 3-5 lobes, the lobes ciliate; corolla pale purple, 0.9-l.2 cm across, tube funnelform, shorter than or equaling the lobes, lobes pubescent at margin; stamens about as long as the corolla, villous slightly distal to filament base. Berry red, ovoid or oblong, 7-20 mm across; seeds numerous, yellow, 2.5-3 mm across, discoid.

Distributed in China, Japan, Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, cultivated and escaping in Europe. Taiwan, commonly cultivated, escaping and long-persistent.
