Vernonia kawakamii Hayata
Dwarf subshrubs; stems 7-10 cm long, procumbent at base, often branched, densely hirsute. Middle cauline leaves numerous, crowded, spatulate, 16-27×4.5-7 mm, apex rounded, base gradually narrowed, margins subentire, hirsute on both surfaces; upper leaves gradually smaller. Heads 6-7 mm broad, corymbosely arranged, peduncle 5-12 mm long, densely hirsute; involucre subglobose, ca. 5-7 mm across, bracts 5-seriate, imbricate, spinulose, outer bracts subulate, 1.5-2 mm long, middle bracts ovate, inner bracts oblong; corolla 2.5 mm long. Achenes ca. 1-2 mm long, ca. 0.5 mm broad, 5-ribbed. Pappus white, 1 mm long, deciduous. Chromosome number, n = 9 (Peng et al., Bot. Bull. Acad. Sin. 27: 221. 1986).

The Philippines (Batan). Taiwan, a rare maritime plant on raised coral rocks, only on Hsiao Lanyu Island and the southern tip of Longkeng.
