Annual herb, to 1m tall, evidently pubescent; stems erect or scandent, lanate, sometimes glandular, often with hairs 1-4 mm long, often glabrescent above. Leaves solitary or paired, ovate to elliptic or lanceolate, 2-5 (-6) cm long, 1.5-4 (-5) cm wide, apically acuminate or acute, basally rounded or obtuse, entire, sinuate, or dentate, pubescent, moreso beneath; petiole 1-4 cm long. Pedicel 3-7 mm long, glabrate or pubescent. Flower with calyx divided about halfway, 3-6 mm long, the lobes narrowly deltoid, pubescent or not; corolla yellow with conspicuous spots and pubescent in the throat, spotted in the throat, 7-12 mm long; anthers bluish, often twisting on opening, 1.5-2 mm long. Berry 10-15 mm across, loosely enveloped in the fruiting calyx; fruiting pedicel less than half the length of the calyx; fruiting calyx strongly 5-angled, 2-4 cm across; seeds yellowish, discoid, 1.2-1.5 mm across. Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.

Native of the Americas, widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions. In Taiwan in lowland areas of disturbance.

This species can be recognized by its overall, often glandular, pubescence and its strongly 5-angled calyx.
