Sometimes armed shrubs or trees to 4 m tall, glabrate or stellate-pubescent; prickles sparse apically, short, often dark. Leaves ovate to oblong-ovate, 10-18 cm long, 4.5-6.5 cm wide, apically acute or acuminate, basally cuneate, obtuse or rounded, often dimidiate, subentire or shallowly lobed, chartaceous, on emerging tomentose on both sides, glabrescent, mostly drying concolorous, lateral veins 3-6 on each side; petioles 1-4 cm long, pubescent. Inflorescenses subaxillary, cymose, peduncles slender, pubescent, 2-3 cm long; pedicels 1-2 cm long. Flowers with calyx, 5-6 mm long, glabrate, the lobes caudate, 1.5-4 mm long before splitting to become 3-4 mm long; corolla white, 8-11 mm long; filaments glabrous, anthers tapering, 7-9 mm long; ovary glabrous. Berry bright red, globose, 5-9 mm across; seeds light brownish compressed-globose, 2.5-3 mm across, scattered villose.Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.

Endemic. 1,000-1,900 m in central part of Taiwan.

This species is similar to S. macaonense but differs in being less pubescent overall, in its less prominently lobed leaves, slonger calyx lobes, and larger seeds. This species occurs in uplands between 1000 and 1500 m, while S. macaonense is restricted to lowland sites.
