Stems 40 cm long, sulcate-striate, densely cobwebby hairy. Radical leaves oblanceolate, 22×5-6 cm, apex acuminate, base attenuate into petiole, pinnatifid, segments 8-9, ovate or often trilobed, spines of lobules 5-8 mm long, densely cobwebby; cauline leaves gradually smaller and numerous, oblanceolate to lanceolate, base attenuate, apex acuminate, pinnatifid, segments trilobed, spinose, densely cobwebby hairy. Heads terminal, often 2 or 3 congested, 3-3.5 cm across; involucre more or less cobwebby, globose-campanulate, 18-20×30 cm, bracts 6-seriate, erect, outer ones elongate, usually longer; corolla pale yellow or rose purple, 15 mm long, limb often shorter than tube, lobes unequal; pappus brown, 13-14 mm long.
