Youngia japonica subsp. japonica

黃鵪菜

Pubescent biennials; stems erect, often branched at base, 20-100 cm long. Radical leaves thin, rosulate, oblanceolate, 8-25×*1.7-6 cm, acute, base narrowed to a petiole, lyrate-pinnately parted, loosely mucronulate-dentate, slightly crisp puberulous on both surfaces, terminal segments largest, deltoid-ovate, usually rounded, lateral segments gradually smaller. Heads 7-8 mm across, many, in terminal corymbose panicles; peduncle 6-25 mm long, slender. Involucre 4-6×*3-4 mm, calyculate, outer bracts few, much smaller than inner, ovate, ca. 0.5 mm long, inner bracts 8, lanceolate, obtuse. Flowers 17-19, yellow, 5-8 mm long. Achenes oblong, ca. 1.8 mm long, brown, apex gradually narrowed, with 11-13 scaberulous ribs. Pappus white, ca. 3 mm long, persistent.

A variable species widely distributed from southeastern Asia to Australia. Taiwan, very common in wastelands, cultivated fields and on roadsides.
