Perennial, rhizomatous aquatic. Stem branched. Leaves shortly petiolate to subsessile, translucent, net-veined, veins 7 or more, minutely dentate at margin, lanceolate to elliptic or obovate-elliptic, 6-9 (-14.5) cm long, 2-3 cm broad, acute or acuminate. Stipules free, lanceolate, 2.5-5.7 cm long, 6-9 mm broad, subobtuse, 2-keeled. Spikes, cylindric, dense, c. 3 or more cm long. Fruitlets 2.5-4 mm long, 2.5-3 mm broad, shortly beaked, shape variable from obovoid to almost rounded, beak decurrent, central.

Type: Habitat in Europae lacubus, stagnis, fluviis argillosis.
Distribution: Europe, N. Africa and temperate Asia.
The plants are used for manuring and in pisciculture.
