Echinospermum heteranthum Ledeb.Lappula echinata var. heterantha (Ledeb.) O. Kuntze
Annual up to 40 cm tall. Stem simple or branched. Stem and branches covered with suberect hairs arising from a tuberculate base. Basal leaves soon withering, oblanceolate, 15-60 x 4-10 mm, covered on both surfaces with suberect hairs. Cauline leaves similar but smaller. Fruiting pedicel erect, 2-3 mm long. Calyx lobes c. 2 mm long, up to 3 mm in fruit, spreading. Corolla blue, 3-4 mm long. Nutlets c. 2.5 mm long, margin with 2-series of glochidiate appendages, of which the outer series is smaller. Middle dorsal area ± keeled and minutely tuberculate. Style barely exserted.

Distribution: E. Europe, Soviet C. Asia, Iran, Pakistan, W. Tibet.
Closely related to Lappula squarrosa but differing in the outer series of appendages are shorter than the inner series.
