Echinospermum bungei Boiss.Paracaryum bungei (Boiss.) Brand
Annual, weak-stemmed herb. Stems solitary or few, branched; branches ± ascending with appressed pubescence. Basal leaves lanceolate, 8-15(-17) x 1.5-2 mm, lower cauline lanceolate to subsessile, covered on both surfaces with hairs arising from a tuberculate base. Inflorescence lax, elongating in fruit. Pedicels upto 5 mm in fruit, pubescent. Calyx lobes lanceolate, hairy, c. 1.5 mm long, upto 3 mm in fruit, pubescent. Corolla blue, 1.5-2 mm'long; limb with suberect lobes. Nutlets 34 mm long, ovoid; margin winged; wings ± curved at the edge, dentate with teeth glochidiate at apex; dorsal middle area with glochidiate appendages.
Type: Persia borealis, prope Shahrud, Bunge s.n. (G, isotype GH).
Distribution: Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Soviet C. Asia.
Found from 1300-1800 m in dry places. Fl. Per.: April-May. Because of its annual habit, small flowers and fruits, often included in Microparacaryum (=Paracaryum sect. microparacaryum). For further discussion see notes under Paracaryum.
