Stems 30-80 cm tall, erect, striated, with few branches at top. Radical leaves oblong, 5-20 cm long, long-petiolate, upper ones sessile, apex acute, base contracted, remotely and deeply pinnatifid, segments 4, ovate-oblong, with apex obtusih and topped by a spine 2 mm long, basal leaves largest, upper leaves gradually smaller and less divided, oblong to lanceolate. Heads terminal, solitary, ca. 4 cm in diameter; involucre 10-16×3-6 mm, bracts free, spatulate, spinulose, outer gradually shorter. Corolla 9-11 mm long, limb shorter than tube. Achenes cylindric, 7×2 mm, densely long hairy; pappus 1-3 mm long. Chromosome number, 2n = 32+2B (Peng et al., Bot. Bull. Acad. Sin. 27: 221. 1986).

HSINCHU: Sasaki s. n. 1910.

Eastern and southern China. Taiwan, in mountainous areas in northern and central parts of the island, not collected for more than half a century, probably extinct in the wild. Locally cultivated as a medicinal herb.
