Biennials; stems erect, 45-100 cm long, corymbosely branched apically, hirsute. Lower cauline leaves obovate-oblong, 12.5-14×5-8 cm, apex short acuminate, base narrowed into a winged petiole, slightly clasping, lyrate-pinnatifid, terminal segments deltoid, lateral segments 2-4 pairs, obovate, irregularly mucronulate-dentate, upper surface green, minutely scabrid, lower surface glaucous, hairy along veins; median cauline leaves oblong to elliptic, 7-11×5-8 cm, lyrate-pinnatifid, base broadly auriculate clasping, terminal segment reniform, lateral segments obovate, 2 or 3 pairs, margins irregularly incised-dentate; upper leaves gradually smaller, ovate-lanceolate. Inflorescence loosely corymbose, hirsute; peduncle 6-16 mm long, basal bracteoles 3-4 mm long. Heads erect in bud. Involucre cylindric, 10-15×6-7 mm, bracts glabrous, obtuse, gradually longer upward, outer ones ovate-oblong, 3-4 mm long, median ones oblong-lanceolate, inner ones linear. Florets 25-28; corolla dirty yellow to pale purple, 11-12×0.8 mm. Achenes oblong, 4-5×2-2.3 mm, black, compressed, 3-ridged, beak slender, 2.5-3 mm long. Pappus white, 7 mm long, bristles subequal. Chromosome number, 2n = 18 (Peng & Hsu, 1978).
