700-900 species of wide distribution. Some are cultivated for medicinal and perfumery purposes. Some are well-known garden plants (S. slpendens Sellow ex Roermer et Schultes also S. sclarea L. from Central Asia). About 80 species in the FSU mostly in the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Two species from Central Asia are also of garden interest.
