Annual or perennial herbs, often caespitose or with decumbent stems, glabrous or glandular hairy. Leaves subulate, setaceous, linear or ovate, elliptic, obovate or orbicular. Inflorescence a mono or dichasial cyme. Sepals 5, free, 1 (-3) nerved. Petals white, 5, usually entire. Stamens 10. Styles 3. Capsule conical to globose dehiscing by 6 teeth. Seeds reniform to subreniform, smooth, turberculate or papillose.
A north temperate genus with c. 250 species. Well represented in Europe and USSR. In Pakistan 7 species are found, some growing at high altitude.
