Terrestrial plants, variable in size, with homoblastic leafy pesudo-bulbs or pseudobulbous stems. Leaves 2 or several, sessile or petiolate, plicate. Scape lateral from the pseudobulb or from a leaf-axil, with rather loose, few to many-flowered raceme. Bracts persistent or deciduous. Flowers showy, resupinate, white or variously coloured. Perianth segments subequal in length. Labellum with or without spur, 3-lobed, attached to the base of the column or more or less to its whole length, disk usually lamellate. Column usually short; anther terminal, incumbent, conical; pollinia 8, clavate, sometimes unequal, fixed in pairs to short caudicles, attached to a viscid gland; stigma entire. Ovary with pedicel; ripe seed-capsules drooping. 
c. 100 species throughout tropical regions; in subtropical and temperate Himalaya ascending up to 3500 m. Represented in Pakistan by 2 species.
