Monoecious or dioecious shrubs or small trees. Leaves scaly or needle‑like, opposite. Male cones terminal or axillary, ovaloid. Microsporophylls bearing 3‑7 microsporangia on the undersurface. Female cones of 3‑8 scales, becoming ± fleshy at maturity. Seeds solitary, not winged.

60 species, N. hemisphere. Represented in Pakistan by 5 species.


1 All leaves linear lanceolate. or broadly so, in whorls of three, subappressed to spreading.   (2)
+ Leaves dimorphic, those on lower branches linear-lanceolate or aciculate; on upper branches scale-like, opposite decussate.   (3)
       
2 (1) Leaves 5-15 mm long, lanceolate, jointed at base. Fruit 2-3 seeded.   Juniperus communis
+ Leaves 4-7 mm long, ovate lanceolate, not jointed at the base. Fruit 1 seeded.   Juniperus squamata
       
3 (1) Branchlets stout, c, 2 mm thick. Fruit oblong, 10-15 mm long, 1 seeded.   Juniperus turkestanica
+ Branchlets and shoots ± slender, ± 1.5 mm thick. Fruit globose or nearly so, up to 9 mm broad, 2-6 seeded.   (4)
       
4 (3) Scale leaves acute. Fruit bluish black, 8-9 mm broad, 3-6 seeded.   Juniperus excelsa
+ Scale leaves obtuse. Fruit brownish violet, 5-8, 2-3 seeded,   Juniperus chinensis
