Annual or perennial herbs with hispid or rough parts. Leaves entire, alternate. Inflorescence a raceme or flowers axillary. Calyx 5-partite, lobes linear. Corolla tubular or funnelform, usually with a gibbous throat; lobes suberect to spreading at anthesis. Stamens 5, included. Ovary prominently 4-lobed; style slender, stigma 2-fid. Nutlets 4, ovoid, smooth to tuberculate.
c. 50-species, mainly American, a few African, European and Asian. Represented in Pakistan by 1 species.
